Raptor-specific fender flares and grille.Raptor-specific suspension with adaptive Fox shock absorbers.17-inch alloy wheels with 35-inch all-terrain tires.Essentially, this isn't the truck for you if you plan on towing or hauling more than you plan on off-roading. While that bests the Ram TRX by 90 pounds, it's not very impressive for a full-size truck or even a midsize truck. Payload is a similar story, with a maximum payload of 1,400 pounds for the Raptor. It is, however, a lot less than the standard F-150, which maxes out at around 14,000 pounds. That means the Raptor slightly edges out the Ram TRX, which tops out at 8,100 pounds for towing. The maximum tow rating for the 2021 Raptor is 8,200 pounds - that's pretty impressive when you consider its off-road capability. How's the F-150 Raptor's towing and hauling? One notable Raptor exclusive is the Trail One-Pedal Drive feature that automatically applies the brakes at slow speeds to make driving on rough terrain easier. The graphics are of course dressed up for Raptor duties, but there are new Raptor-specific features too. That means everything from over-the-air infotainment system updates to a standard large digital instrument cluster and a 12-inch center touchscreen. How's the F-150 Raptor's tech?Įlsewhere, the Ford Raptor offers many of the same tech features and options available on the regular F-150. The all-terrain tires make a bit of extra road noise at highway speeds, but it's easily drowned out by a bit of music. The extra suspension travel provided by the Raptor's special suspension means that large potholes are shrugged off without even the slightest disturbance inside the cabin. Out on the road the Raptor's ride quality is just as impressive. The Raptor's crew-cab cabin is also spacious front and rear and lined with high-quality materials. Just like the standard F-150, the Raptor's interior is comfortable and quiet at a standstill. The compromise for steering feel on the road is noticeable, but totally worth it. Out on the open dirt, you don't want tight, heavy steering.
The steering is a bit light on the highway, but it works great when you're drifting the Raptor and sliding sideways at 50 mph across a sand dune. Massive suspension travel and all sorts of high-tech trail goodies combine to make off-roading an easy task for almost any driver. Whether you're on- or off-road, the Raptor feels like a true trophy truck that's adapted for the street. Also, Ford has teased an upcoming Raptor R version, and we suspect it will have a supercharged V8 of its own. But the Raptor is still plenty strong, and Ford has done some work to make the exhaust sound beefier than before. So, yeah, the Ram TRX has the bigger mouthful of teeth thanks to its supercharged 702-hp V8. This is pretty much a carryover powertrain from the previous-generation truck. Powering the F-150 Raptor is a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 good for 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. This is still a big full-size truck, so it's not going to be as maneuverable as a Ford Bronco on a tight trail, but in general there's loads of capability here.

With the larger tire setup, the Raptor has 13.1 inches of ground clearance plus enhanced approach and departure angles. You can even go bigger and get 37-inch tires as an option.
The Raptor comes standard with 35-inch tires, which are quite large for a pickup. That means more traction under acceleration.įurthering the truck's off-road capabilities are beefy Fox adaptive shock absorbers and big all-terrain tires. This new design provides more lateral stabilization and ultimately does a better job of keeping the wheels and tires on the ground. Notably, the rear suspension switches from the regular F-150's leaf-spring rear suspension to a multilink coil-spring rear suspension. This new 2021 Raptor gets a thorough suspension overhaul compared to the standard F-150 so it can sail over ruts, bumps and air with the durability you'd expect from a desert-racing-inspired truck. Ford has a seriously impressive truck on its hands. Based on the also-redesigned-for-2021 F-150, the Raptor goes head-to-head with Ram's new 1500 TRX in a battle for off-road truck supremacy.

Ian Malcolm, in the movie Jurassic Park, is, "Life, uhh, finds a way." Well, in the world of trucks, nature has found a way to make off-road trucks even more awesome with the debut of the 2021 Ford Raptor. One of the more memorable quotes from Jeff Goldblum's leather jacket-clad character, Dr.
